on the night.
The Senior team got the league of to a great start last Saturday with
a comprehensive victory over St Marys. St Marys opened the scoring on
six minutes with a point from a 45 while the Gaels opened their account
a minute later with a free from Paddy O'Grady. This was followed by a
great score from John Paul Henry from the sideline while Phillip Murphy
added a third a minute later. Both teams struggled to dominate in the
following period with scores hard to come by, however the Gaels broke
the deadlock on nineteen minutes when Keith McMorrow was on the edge of
the square to fist to the net a sideline ball from John Paul Henry. St
Marys responded well finishing the half strongly with three points without
reply to leave the halftime score 1-3 to 0-4.
John Paul Henry added his second point after three minutes of the second
half while a minute later, Eoin McDermott put the Gaels six points up
with a goal from the edge of the square after a great pass in from Keith
McMorrow. Henry scored a great point from the 40 to extend the Gaels and
they were now dominating all sectors of play with the backs in particular
snuffing out whatever Marys threw at them. Marys did score two frees midway
through the half, however when substitute Kevin Barry neatly tucked away
the third goal on twenty one minutes, it
was game over as the Gaels went eighth points up. Joe Quinn added two
more before the end while Eoin McDermott scored an excellent long range
point to wrap up the scoring for the Gaels who went on to win by ten points
on a scoreline of 3-8 to 0-7.
