2009 Kiernan Cup Final

29th May 2009, Tubbercurry

Shamrock Gaels 1-11

Bunninadden 0-06

Shamrock Gaels clinched the 2009 Kiernan Cup title with a comprehensive victory over Bunninadden last Friday evening in Tubbercurry. The Gaels went into this game as underdogs having lost to their near neighbours in both rounds of the league, however on the day they were much hungrier and played the game at a frantic pace which Bunninadden found difficult to match.

The Gaels were playing with the benefit of a strong breeze in the first half and they took full advantage going in at half time eight points ahead. The Gaels first two score came from a Joe Quinn free after five minutes while he added a second free a minute later. The Gaels had a number of wides before Quinn again scored a great point from forty yards to settle the Gaels nerves. Bunninadden enjoyed a good period of possession mid way through the half, however they could only convert one score, a nice point from Kenneth Kerins coming in from the left. Both sides exchanged wides before the Gaels got the score of the day. The move started in the Gaels back line and was picked up by the industrious Derek Davey who did some great work down the left side. He delivered a pass into Conor Mullen who came in from a tight angle and calmly scored a goal on David Flannery's near post to give the Gaels a five point lead on twenty minutes. This spurred the Gaels who followed up with two great points, the first from Joe Quinn from an acute angle on the left while Frank Quinn added another from a similar position.

The last ten minutes of the half was dogged with frees with referee Michael Duffy was busy handing out a number of yellow cards during robust exchanges between both sides. The Gaels had two further wides in the following minutes before Joe Quinn added a free on twenty eight minutes. Quinn added another on the stroke of half time as Eoin McDermott was fouled as he was bearing down on goals to leave the Gaels eight points up at half time on a scoreline of 1-07 to 0-1.

Bunninadden were now in real trouble and needed a good start to the second half if they were to have any chance of winning. They had the benefit of a breeze that had now picked up, however it was the Gaels who came out and competed fiercely starting where they had left off in the first half. Joe Quinn adding a point from a free on two minutes after he was fouled by Padraig McGetrick while a minute later Quinn added another point from a free after Eoin McDermott was fouled - both incidents earning Bunninadden yellow cards in a hot tempered opening five minutes. Bunninadden added their second point on seven minutes with a point from a free from Vincent Frizzel. The Gaels immediately responded to restore their lead with a point from Derek Davey while Quinn added another free on ten minutes to put the Gaels twelve points ahead and effectively end the game as a contest.

Frizzel added another point from play a minute later while the Gaels had three wides in the following minutes all from frees. Joseph Rogers scored a good point under pressure for Bunninadden on twenty minutes while Vincent Frizzel added another free three minutes later. Bunninadden were now beginning to find their feet, however they found tough resistance in a young Gaels defence who defended well in the closing stages as they chased their first senior trophy in a number of years. Frizzel added another point from a free with three minutes left to leave eight points between the team. Bunninadden had a goal chance in the last minute; however Willie Gormely's shot went wide while the Gaels ran out deserving winners on a scoreline of 1-11 to 0-06.

The Kiernan Cup was presented to Gaels Captain Damien Lyons by County Board Vice-chairman Cyril Feehily.
