The

at 8.30PM in Riverstown Hall. This meeting is open to all Parents in
the area and will provide information on recognising and dealing with
Drug and Alcohol abuse. Brendan Murphy from the GAA National Office

along with Garda Niall Davey from the Garda Drugs unit. The meeting
is only open to all adults and we would encourage all to attend as we
all need all the help we can get to assist us with dealing with these
issues.
John
Quinn has been appointed Manager of the Senior Team for 2008. He will
be assisted by Shane Quigley with two other selectors to be appointed
shortly. The first get together of the Senior Panel will be this Friday
evening in Riverstown Park at 8.00PM and a full attendance is expected.
We wish John and Shane well in their new appointments.
The
Club held a very successful AGM last Saturday evening in the Clubhouse.
The meeting was opened by Club President Tommy McDermott who wished
the club well in the coming year. The Chairman, Vincent Henry welcomed
the large attendance and said that he was encouraged by the attendance
especially the good turnout of youth at the meeting. He thanked the
Club officers for their help during the year. He thanked Bord Na Nog
who had a very successful year at under age both on and off the field.
He also thanked all those involved in promoting Ladies Football, Hurling
and Camogie within the club. He also thanked Cormac Kearns and Michael
Conlon who had stepped down as Senior Management. He also thanked John
McDermott for his continued sponsorship of the club. He also thanked
John Joe McGoldrick for his continued work in keeping the clubhouse
in pristine condition. He also thanked Katie and Margaret for their
help in assisting John Joe when needed. The facilities are one of the
best maintained in the county and this is due to John Joe’s ongoing
dedication. The Chairman also thanked Lauri Quinn for his help and assistance
during the year and Mrs Quinn and the Quinn family for their continued
good work in maintaining the team kits during the year. The Chairman
expressed disappointment of our performance at Senior Level and he hoped
for a better 2008. The Chairman also congratulated Sligo on winning
the Connacht Championship after 32 years.
In
his report Secretary Andrew Kearns gave a full rundown of playing activities
for the year. He congratulated Sligo on winning the Connacht Championship.
The senior team finished up in joint third in the league and failed
to make the quarter finals of the Championship. The team remain in Senior
Championship football for 2008 due to an incorrect application of the
rules governing the 2007 competition. The Secretary urged the players
to row in behind the new Management team in 2008 and was confident that
the team will perform at a higher level in the years to come given its
relatively young profile. The junior team only played three games in
the league and the Secretary was critical of the way this competition
was been neglected. He expressed a hope that the junior competitions
would be better organised this year as it is important to the senior
team’s development to have a thriving junior team. The Secretary
expressed disappointment that we were unable to field a team in the
U-20 championship – given our proud record in this competition
down through the years. The Secretary also congratulated Bord NaNog
on the successful hosting of the All Ireland Feile Na Nog. He also congratulated
the Minors who were narrowly beaten by a point by Tubbercurry in the
final of the ‘B’ Championship, the U-14 team that defeated
St John’s in the League final and who lost to the same opposition
in the Championship final. He also congratulated the U-14 hurlers who
won the ‘B’ Championship. The Secretary also recalled the
presentation of the inaugural Leo & Phil Kearns underage Player
of the Year awards and on behalf of the Kearns he thanked all who had
organised the successful presentation. He congratulated Paul Brennan
who was the worthy recipient of the underage the Player of the Year
award. He also thanked all involved in Scor who keep the flag flying.
The Secretary also congratulated club member Kevin Barry who lined out
for Sligo in the All Ireland Minor C Final. He also thanked the ladies
team, who despite operating under difficult circumstances had a good
year.
The
Secretary recalled the special club meeting that took place in November
and went through the various action items that were agreed on the night.
He hoped that the club would maintain the momentum and enthusiasm of
that meeting and that everyone would deliver on the programme for 2008.
The Secretary also congratulated Riverstown Park Committee and the Shamrock
Gaels representatives on that committee, John Quinn and Martin Baker,
on the successful development of Riverstown Park for all of the community.
He looked forward to the club availing of the facilities in 2008. He
also paid tribute to Andrew Hannon who had stepped down after 8 years
as chairman at last years AGM. The Secretary also thanked the executive
committee for their work during the year, Lauri Quinn for his support
as President of the Connaught Council. He also congratulated Gus Chapman
who has been appointed to the referee’s panel. He has had a special
word of thanks for Club Physio Eamon McMunn who had given tremendous
service during the year. He also thanked the Finance Committee for the
healthy state of the balance sheet and also Club Sponsor John McDermott.
The Secretary also thanked the McGoldrick family and in particular John
Joe for their ongoing work in maintaining the clubhouse. The Secretary
also sympathised with all Gaels that had suffered bereavements during
the year, especially the Henry Family and Chairman Vincent on the loss
of Pat, or Club Patron and to the McDermott family and Club President
Tommy on the loss of a great friend of the Gaels, Tony McDermott. Ar
Dheils De go raibh a nAinmneacha go leir. The Secretary concluded by
wishing everyone well for 2008 and he hope that Shamrock Gaels would
continue to grow as a club. There was a lot of work to be done in 2008
and he hoped that everyone would put their shoulder to the wheel to
achieve the goals we have set for ourselves.
In
the Joint Treasurers report, Niall Kearns published the Income and Expenditure
account for the year. This showed a healthy surplus for the year with
the main income coming from the Members draw, Golf Classic and the Race
Night. The re-introduction of the Lotto Draw was also a major boost
to income. The Treasurer encouraged more members to join the monthly
draw. He also thanked main Sponsor, John McDermott of Tommy Macs for
his continued sponsorship and FBD Insurances for their continued sponsorship
of the Golf Classic. The Joint Treasurer thanked the Finance Committee
under the chairmanship of Michael Tuohy for their work. He also thanked
Lauri Quinn for preparing the accounts and Mary Quinn who continues
to keep the day to day finances in good order. He also thanked previous
Joint Treasurer Vivion Boyd for his help and guidance during the year.
Mary
Quinn delivered the report on under age football on behalf of Bord NaNog.
The Bord Na Nog AGM had been held the previous week. Mary gave special
mention to the U-14 Team on their success in both the league and championship.
She also had a special word of thanks for Paul Brennan and Paul Higgins
for their involvement in underage teams during the year. Mary thanked
all involved in making Feile such a great success – the U-14 team
and Management, the host families and all those who had helped out in
all the various activities. Mary thanked all of the sponsors of the
under age teams, in particular, Fergal McLoughlin, Keith Breheny and
Lauri Quinn. She also congratulated the U-10 team on winning the Dominic
Quinn cup for only the second time. She also congratulated the Minor
team who reached the county final and were narrowly beaten. She also
wished new committee well for the year especially Secretary Josephine
Leyden.
There
were a number of other contributions to the meeting including a number
of discussions on the Senior Team and hopes for 2008. Seamus Cawley
thanked the club for their contribution to Carran Hill Red Cross branch.
Vivion Boyd also remembered Pat Henry and Tony McDermotts sad passing
during the year.
In
closing the meeting, Chairman Vincent Henry appealed for a large turnout
at the Drugs and Alcohol meeting next Friday night. He also noted that
the club will be holding a social event on 5th March in McDermott’s
of Castlebaldwin. This had been traditionally the time of the club function
and this was been revived. He also stated that the annual club mass
would be held at this time – more details later. He also congratulated
Riverstown Park Committee and John Quinn and Martin Baker for the excellent
facilities now available to the community as a result of years of hard
work. He appealed for the senior players to get behind the new management
team and he hoped for a successful year. He concluded by wishing the
club and all at the meeting the very best for 2008.

It has
been a number of years since the Gaels met St Marys in the League and
they renewed old rivalries last Sunday in Shamrock Gaels Park. St Marys
opened the scoring on two minutes but the Gaels quickly responded with
a point from Joe Quinn. St Marys scored their second on seven minutes
and this was to be their last score of the half as the Gaels, aided
by a strong breeze and good defending scored six unanswered points.
There were three from Joe Quinn, one each from Enda Foley and Conor
Mullen and a rare score with the left foot from corner back Michael
Hannon, who was a long way from home. The Gaels went in at half time
five points up on a score-line of 0-7 to 0-2.
The Gaels
started the second half with a point from Joe Quinn; however they were
rocked with a goal and a point from St Marys that reduced the deficit
to two points after three minutes. St Marys were now dominating proceedings
and levelled the game after fifteen minutes with three unanswered points
from the influential Mark Breheny. Joe Quinn responded with a free to
put the Gaels ahead as the game started to get scrappy. St Marys edged
in front with two further points; however Joe Quinn levelled the match
with a point from a free deep into injury time. The final score was
0-11 to 1-8, a draw which was probably a fair result in the end. The
Team and scorers were: Mark Tuohy, Paul Brennan, Keith McMorrow, Michael
Hannon (0-1), Colin Harte, Damien Lyons, Niall Henry, Jarlath Lyons,
Conor Mullen (0-1), Vincent Boyd, Frank Quinn, Derrick Davey, Joe Quinn
(0-8), Enda Foley (0-1), and Johnny Burke. Subs: Enda Tuohy for Derrick
Davey.
The Gaels
are at home to St Farnans next Saturday in the Kiernan Cup at 4.30PM.

The
Senior Team lost at home to St Farnans on Saturday in the second round
of the Kiernan Cup. This effectively ends our interest in the competition.
The Gaels were rocked by a goal within the first minute when a long
ball into defence was not dealt with. The Gaels responded well and were
on level terms after seven minutes with three points in quick succession
all from frees - two from Mark Tuohy and one from John Paul Henry. In
difficult slippery conditions, both sides exchange scores before St
Farnans scored two points without reply midway through the half to put
them into a one point lead. The Gaels were guilty of some poor shooting
in the following minutes and had two goal chances that they failed to
convert. The Gaels did however gain control and finished the half strongly
with three points from Conor Mullen, a 45 from Mark Tuohy and a free
form John Paul Henry to lead by a point at half time on a scoreline
of 0-7 to 1-3. The Gaels were again under pressure at the start of the
second half, conceding a second goal from a penalty after five minutes.
The Gaels did up their game and had the better of the exchanges for
the following fifteen minutes; however they failed to convert this dominance
into scores with a lot of ball breaking down in the final third of the
pitch with the final pass often going astray. The Gaels registered their
first score on seventeen minutes with a point from Ciarain Coleman,
however in the closing stages of the game St Farnans took control and
scored three unanswered points to race into a four point lead. John
Paul Henry scored a consolation point at the end from a free to leave
the final score 0-9 to 2-6 – the difference in the end being the
two goals conceded. The Team was: Donal Tuohy, James Conlon, Keith McMorrow,
James Lyons, Colin Harte, Damien Lyons, Niall Henry, Conor Mullen (0-1),
Jarlath Lyons, Vincent Boyd, Mark Tuohy (0-3), Derrick Davey, Enda Foley,
John Paul Henry (0-4), and Johnny Burke. Sub: Ciarain Coleman (0-1)
for Enda Foley.
The
Gaels are away to Drumcliffe/Rosses Point in the second round of the
league next Sunday 9th March at 3.00PM.

The
Senior Team went down to Drumcliffe/Rosses Point last Sunday in round
two of the league. In a game that saw both defences on top, the forwards
on both sides had very little scoring opportunities in a low scoring
game. The Gaels took a long time to settle and did not register their
first point until the twenty fifth minute despite having numerous chances.
The first was a goal chance within the first five minutes that fell
to Johnny Burke; however the keeper made a good save. Drumcliffe registered
their first score after four minutes; however they also found the going
difficult and did not register their second score until the 16th minute
when Sean Flannery pointed. The Gales missed four frees in the following
minutes before John Paul Henry finally broke the deadlock with a point
from a free on twenty five minutes. Flannery again pointed for Drumcliffe
before Enda Foley scored a good point to leave the score at 0-3 to 0-2
at half time. John Paul Henry opened the scoring with a free within
four minutes of the re-start to level the scoring. Drumcliffe responded
with two scores while John Paul Henry again pointed from a free on ten
minutes. The Gaels were well on top in the following period; however
they were unable to get the vital scores. They had two great goal chances
both of which were blasted wide. The Gaels were not short of effort;
however they were frustrated in front of goals. Drumcliffe on the other
hand made much better use of their limited chances and went into a four
point lead after twenty minutes of the second half. The Gaels had a
few chances to claw back the deficit, however Drumcliffe remained firm
and in the end were deserving winners on a scoreline of 0-9 to 0-6.
The team and scorers were: Donal Tuohy, Paul Brennan, Keith McMorrow,
James Lyons, Colin Harte, Damien Lyons, Michael Hannon, Conor Mullen,
Jarlath Lyons, Derek Davey, Frank Quinn, Niall Henry, John Paul Henry
(0-5f), Enda Foley (0-1), and Johnny Burke. Subs: Enda Tuohy for Enda

The Senior
Team had a good away win over Castleconnor last Sunday in Round 4 of
the League. The game was played in very blustery conditions which favoured
the Gaels in the first half. It took both teams a long time to settle
in a low scoring game with the first score not coming until the seventeenth
minute when Castleconnor pointing from a free.
John Paul Henry opened the Gaels account a minute later with a good
point from play. Castleconnor did put the Gaels under a lot of pressure
in the second quarter forcing three excellent saves from keeper Mark
Tuohy while they also had numerous chances for points which they did
not take. The Gaels did finish the half strongly with three points one
from John Paul Henry from a free and one each from Johnny Burke and
Enda Foley. The half time score was 0-4 to 0-2. The Gaels started the
second half brightly with a point from John Paul Henry however Castleconnor
started to claw back the lead and had two points in quick succession
to leave the minimum between the teams. Henry pointed another free on
sixteen minutes to extend the lead. Castleconnor started to take control
mid-way through the second half and scored three points without reply
to take the lead after twenty six minutes.
The Gaels
however dug deep and when a high ball into the Castleconnor area fell
kindly for Connor Mullen, he made no mistake in scoring the only goal
of the game in the final minute to give the Gaels a deserved victory
on a scoreline of 1-6 to 0-7. The team was: Mark Tuohy, Colin Harte,
Keith McMorrow, Niall Henry, Michael Hannon, Paul Brennan, James Lyons,
Jarlath Lyons, Conor Mullen (1-0), Derrick Davey, Frank Quinn, Vincent

The
Junior Team had their first game of the year in Division 5 with a draw
at home against St Johns on Good Friday. The Gaels will feel disappointed
with the result having led throughout with St Johns getting the equaliser
deep into injury time. The game was played in very difficult windy conditions
with scores difficult to some by, the first not coming until the nineteenth
minute when Duncan Ryan opened the scoring with an excellent point.
Duncan was again on the mark a minute later with a point from long range.
Vincent Boyd pointed from a free on twenty four minutes before Duncan
Ryan again pointed to leave the half time score at 0-4 to no score.
Scores were again difficult to come by in the second half, the first
not coming until eleven minutes when Johnny Kenny pointed. St Johns
finally got off the mark on twelve minutes and followed this with a
point from a free. Vincent Boyd pointed a second free while Johnny Kenny
scored the Gaels last score on twenty minutes to leave the Gaels four
points up going into the last ten minutes. St Johns now playing with
the benefit of the wind scored four points without reply, two of which
were in injury time, to level the game at 0-7 to 0-7. The team was:
Donal Tuohy, James Conlon, Raymond Murrin, Jason Murrin, Niall Henry,
Donie Mc Dermott, Enda Tuohy, Noel McKenna, Kieran Coleman, Johnny Kenny

April 2008
The Senior
Team recorded an impressive victory against Calry/St Josephs last Saturday
evening at Shamrock Gaels Park. The Gaels were playing against a strong
breeze in the first half and opened the scoring in the second minute
with a point from John Paul Henry. Calry responded with two scores in
the following minutes while both teams were guilty of a number of wides
in an evenly contested opening quarter. Calry scored a third before
Francis Quinn responded with a free on fifteen minutes. Calry started
to dominate mid way through the first half scoring three points without
reply before Quinn reduced the deficit with a free. Calry were now well
on top and scored three more points to go in at halftime a comfortable
six points up on a scoreline of 0-3 to 0-9. The Gaels were faced with
an uphill battle in the second half and whatever words of wisdom were
spoken at half time they did the trick as the Gaels took control of
the second half and put in an impressive performance keeping Calry scoreless
for the next twenty five minutes.
The first
five minutes of the second half were very scrappy before the Gaels found
their form with a point from Vinny Boyd after a good move. This was
followed quickly by another point from a free through Francis Quinn.
Boyd was again on the mark on ten minutes, this time with a point from
a free while Quinn added two more from frees in the following minutes.
The Gaels were now dominating the exchanges with the backs defending
well and the impressive Francis Quinn giving the Calry defence a torrid
time. Quinn pointed a great free from the ‘40’ to level
the game on nine points each in the eighteenth minute. Vinny Boyd pointed
on twenty one minutes to put the Gaels into the lead for the first time
since the second minute. Calry responded well and got their first point
of the second half on twenty five minutes to level the match again.
Having worked so hard the Gaels were not going to let go and it was
Man of the Match Francis Quinn who again scored from a free on twenty
eight minutes to give the Gaels a one point advantage going into the
closing stages. James Lyons popped up for a goal in a goalmouth scramble
on the stroke of full time to assure the Gaels victory, while Calry
got a consolation point deep into injury time. The final score was 1-11
to 0-11.
The team

he
Senior Team lost by three points to table toppers Geevagh in round 6
of the League played in Riverstown last Saturday. This was the first
Gaelic match played at the newly developed park. The Gaels found themselves
four points down in the opening stages having conceded a goal in the
first minute. The Gaels quickly settled after that and had four wides
before Francis Quinn pointed from a free in the eleventh minute. This
was quickly followed by a good point from Joe Quinn after he picked
up a breaking ball. The game was evenly contested mid way through the
half with both sides exchanging points, Joe Quinn from a free for the
Gaels. The Gaels conceded a freak goal in the closing stages of the
half while Joe Quinn pointed from a free in the last minute to leave
the half time score at 0-4 to 2-2. Geevagh started the second half the
stronger with two points to extend their lead to six points. Joe Quinn
scored a good point mid-way through the second half and with both defences
on top, scores were difficult to come by. The Gaels were well on top
on the last quarter scoring three points all from frees – one
from Joe Quinn and two from Francis Quinn to close the gap to two points
on twenty three minutes. However, Geevagh had the final say scoring
the last point in the closing stages to win by three on a scoreline
of 0-8 to 2-5.

The
Senior Team secured victory against Eastern Harps in round seven of
the league through a Johnny Burke goal in injury time last Saturday
evening in Shamrock Gaels Park. In an entertaining game Eastern harps,
playing with the benefit of the breeze, got off to the better start.
They went into a two point lead before the Gaels registered their first
score on twelve minutes through Michael Hannon. The Gaels scored a well
worked goal through Francis Quinn a minute later and started to dominate
the game in the second quarter. Two points from Vincent Boyd and one
from a Joe Quinn free gave the Gaels a comfortable position at half
time on a scoreline of 1-4 to 0-3. The Gaels started the second half
well with a great point on the sideline from Joe Quinn. Eastern Harps,
however started to get into the game and with their midfield dominating,
they scored three points without reply. The Gaels, however did not panic
and continued to put the pressure on but had three wides in quick succession
mid-way through the second half. Vincent Boyd extended the Gales lead
to three points with an excellent point on sixteen minutes after a sweeping
move from defence. Both teams exchanged points, with Michael Hannon
scoring in a crowded goalmouth before the Gaels were rocked by a goal
on twenty four minutes. With the game now level going into the final
stages, both sides again exchanged points, the Gaels point coming from
Paul Brennan to set up a tense finish. Eastern Harps had the chance
to go ahead on twenty nine minutes however their full forward sent the
ball wide while at the other end the Gales also had a wide. The game
looked like it was heading for a draw when a mistake in the Eastern
Harps defence presented Johnny Burke with an opportunity and he made
no mistake and blasted the ball to the net to give the Gaels a three
point victory on a scoreline of 2-8 to 1-8.
The
team was: Mark Tuohy, Colin Harte, Keith McMorrow, James Lyons, Paul
Brennan (0-1), Damien Lyons, Michael Hannon (0-2), Jarlath Lyons, Conor

The
Junior Team lost by three points to Enniscrone/Kilglass last Friday
in round 2 of the league. Enniscrone opened the scoring on five minutes
before Eddie Cogans got the Gaels on the scoreboard on seven minutes
with a great point. The Gales were well on top for the next period with
both sides exchanging points, the Gaels score coming from Duncan Ryan.
The Gaels however did not capitalise on their advantage and Enniscrone
started to take control scoring three unanswered points in the second
quarter. Enniscrone scored a goal in the closing stages of the half
to go into a six point lead. The final score of the half was a good
individual point from Eoin McDermott to leave the half time score 1-5
to 0-3 in favour of Enniscrone. The Gaels were rocked on the re-start
when Enniscrone scored their second goal and followed this up quickly
with a point to go into a nine point lead. The Gaels however did not
lie down and Duncan Ryan reduced the deficit with two goals the first
on six minutes and the second four minutes later while Noel McKenna
added a point to reduce the deficit to two points. Enniscrone scored
again on thirteen minutes and remarkably this was to be the last score
of the game which appeared to be blown up with five minutes still left
on the clock. The final score as 2-7 to 2-4.
The
team was: Brendan Maloney, Raymond Murrin, Sean McHugh, Michael Hannon,
Jason Murrin, James Conlon, Enda Tuohy, Noel McKenna (0-1), Peter Henry,
Eoin McDermott (0-1), Brian McDermott, Duncan Ryan (2-1), Eddie Cogans

The
senior team were well beaten by St Mary’s in round 8 of the league
on Saturday. The Gaels had a good start with points from Vincent Boyd
and Joe Quinn in the opening minutes. St Mary’s opened their scoring
on six minutes and started to dominate especially around the middle,
but they could not turn this advantage into scores with four wides in
a row. The Gaels responded with a pointed free from Francis Quinn on
thirteen minutes. This was followed by a great point from Eoin McDermott
after he fielded a high ball. The Gaels extended their lead to five
points on sixteen minutes when Johnny Burke rolled the ball to the net
after a goalmouth scramble. The Gales were now getting a grip on the
game in midfield and were well on top going into the closing stages
of the first half. St Mary’s responded well and scored four unanswered
points to reduce the deficit to the minimum. Francis Quinn extended
the Gaels lead with a good point under pressure but the Gaels were rocked
when St Mary’s scored a goal in the last minute after a short
free caught the Gaels defence napping. This put St Mary’s into
the lead for the first time on the stoke of half time. St Mary’s
started the second half brightly with a point immediately from the re-
start. This was followed by a second a minute later, before Vincent
Boyd responded for the Gaels. St Mary’s however scored a second
goal on fourteen minutes and started to pull away from the Gaels. The
Gaels resistance completely faded and St Mary’s ran out winners
on a scoreline of 3-16 to 1-7. The Gaels will be disappointed with the
second half collapse considering their first half performance. The team
was: Mark Tuohy, Colin Harte, Keith McMorrow, Paul Brennan, Jarlath
Lyons, Damien Lyons, Derrick Davey, Conor Mullen (0-1), Francis Quinn
(0-2), Peter Henry, Vincent Boyd (0-2), Johnny Burke (1-0), Joe Quinn
(0-1), Eoin McDermott (0-1), Enda Foley, Subs: Niall Craig for Peter
Henry, Enda Tuohy for Joe Quinn, Brian McDermott for Derrick Davey,
James Conlon for Enda Foley.
The
Senior Team are at home in round 9 of the league next Saturday 3rd May
at 7.00 PMagainst Drumcliffe/Rosses Point.
The
Junior Team lost at home to Ballymote on Sunday in an exciting high
scoring game. The Gaels started well with a point from Eoin McDermott
and a goal from Duncan Ryan; however Ballymote were level with a goal
of their own on seven minutes. Noel McKenna added a second goal for
the Gaels on seventeen minutes to put the Gaels into a three point lead
mid- way through the second half. This was followed by three scores
from Eoin McDermott, Enda Tuohy and Johnny Kenny. Noel McKenna scored
a great point from the sideline in the closing stages of the half quickly
followed by another great point from Johnny Kenny. Ballymote scored
two points in quick succession to leave the half time score at 2-8 to
1-10 in favour of the Gaels. Ballymote opened the scoring in the second
half while Johnny Kenny scored two points from frees to extend the Gaels
advantage. Ballymote however took control and scored five points without
reply to take the lead on eighteen minutes. The Gaels fought back well
with three points from the impressive Kenny and another from Vincent
Boyd, to bring the Gaels level. Ballymote however had too much left
in the tank and scored three points in the closing minutes to win by
three points on a scoreline of 2-14 to 1-20. The team was: Peter Henry,
Sean McHugh, Enda Tuohy (0-1), Donie McDermott, Vincent Boyd (0- 1),
Kieran Coleman, Noel McKenna (1-1), Johnny Kenny (0-8), Brian McDermott,
Eoin McDermott (0-2), Eddie Cogans (0-1), Duncan Ryan (1-0), Paul Corcoran
Subs: Raymond Murrin for Paul Corcoran, Ollie McNulty for Eddie Cogans,
James Conlon for Donie McDermott. Welcome back to Eddie Cogans and Paul
Corcoran – it is great to see them back playing with the club.
The
Ladies team drew with Calry/St Joseph’s on Saturday evening last
in Calry. The Gaels conceded two soft goals in the opening half but
only two points separated the sides at half time. In the second half
a great goal from Louise Harte brought the Gaels right back in the game.
Both sides had chances to win the game but over passing of the ball
and kicking the ball into the Calry goalkeeper’s hands on three
occasions in quick succession cost the Gaels another league point while
Kate McDermott pulled off a great save at the other end. Both teams
had to be satisfied with a point each. The Gaels team and scorers were
as follows:- Kate McDermott, Edel Lyons, Siobhan Brennan, Sharon O’Connor,
Joanne Lyons, Meg Mullen, Louise Harte (1-2), Aoife Harte (0-1), Deirdre
Benson, Joanne Markham, Fiona Baker (0-1), Michelle Tuohy, Simone Kelly

The
Minors are out again next Monday 5th May with a home game against Geevagh.
The
U-16 team had a difficult game away to Enniscrone/Kilglass last Friday.
Playing without a number of regulars the Gaels were no match for a stronger
Enniscrone team. The damage was done in the first half when Enniscrone
assisted by a strong breeze ran up a big score which left the Gaels
with too much to do in the second half. They lost out in the end on
a scoreline of 5-19 to 1-4. The team was Kevin Broderick, Richard Johnston,
Gearoid McTiernan, Gavin McMorrow, Eoin O’Connell, Adrian McCann,
Joseph Burns (1-1), Declan Willis (0-1), Jonathan Baker, David Quinn,
Jonathan Quinn, Brian Boyd (0-1), Ciarain O’Connor (0-1). Subs:

The
U-12’s lost out to Castleconnor last Thursday. The Gaels were
well in the game at half time with the sides level; however a strong
wind in the third quarter helped Castleconnor into a commanding lead.
The Gales had a mountain to climb in the final quarter and ended up
losing on a scoreline of 5-11 to 2-4. The team was Stephen Keegan, Conor
Carroll, Ryan McKenna, Darragh Lyons, Paul Higgins, Caolan McCann, Declan
Benson, Michael Kilkenny (1-0), Daniel Willis, Ciarain Kilfeather (0-

The
Senior Team drew with Drumcliffe/Rosses Point last Saturday in round
9 of the League. In difficult playing conditions, Drumcliffe had the
advantage of a very strong breeze in the first half. Joe Quinn opened
the scoring for the Gaels in the fifth minute while Drumcliffe scored
three points without reply to take the lead. The Gaels leveled mid-way
through the second half through points from John Paul Henry and James
Lyons however Drumcliffe were back in front with a goal on twenty minutes
after a well worked move. They added two further points before Joe Quinn
scored in the closing minute of the half to leave the half time score
0-5 to 1-6. The Gaels, now playing with the benefit of the wind started
the second half brightly with a point from John Paul Henry in the opening
minute. Drumcliffe responded with a point on four minutes. With the
Gaels now dominating they scored five points without reply to take the
lead on twenty three minutes. Drumcliffe leveled matters within a minute.
The last five minutes were frantic with both teams chasing the winning
score and while both teams missed scoreable frees in the last few minutes
a draw was probably the fairest result. The final score was 0-11 to
1-8.
The
team was: Donal Tuohy, Colin Harte, Keith McMorrow, Paul Brennan, Conor
Mullen, Damien Lyons, Michael Hannon, Jarlath Lyons, James Lyons (0-1),

The
senior team qualified for the quarter finals of the Senior Chapionship
with a well deserved victory last Saturday over defending County Champions,
Tourlestrane in Ballymote. The Gaels took a while to settle into the
game and Tourlestrane had raced into a three point lead by the fourth
minute. The Gaels got off the mark in the fifth minute
with a free from Joe Quinn. Tourlestrane added another point before
scoring a well worked goal in the eight minute to go into a six point
lead. The Gaels did not panic and quickly settled down with Frank Quinn
scoring two points from frees. Joe Quinn added another to reduce the
deficit to three points. Both sides exchanged two points each from
frees in the closing stages of the first half to leave the half time
score at 1-6 to 0-6.
The Gaels
started the second half in confident mood and with the benefit of the
breeze they were on level terms within six minutes. Frank Quinn and
Gerry McGowan traded points before full forward Eoin McDermott scored
his third goal of the championship to level matters. McGowan added another
for Tourlestrane while Joe Quinn again equalised
with an excellence individual point from the right on eleven minutes.
Tourlestrane scored immediately from the kick out and stretched the
lead to two points a minute later. Joe Quinn added another point from
a free, however Tourlestrane again stretched their lead after a poor
clearance. This was to be Tourlestrane last point of the game and when
Captain Damien Lyons pointed with a left footed shot on twenty two minutes,
the Gaels were sensing victory against a Tourlestrane side that had
no answer for the tenacious approach of the Gaels team. Jarlath Lyons
scored an excellent long range point on twenty four minutes to level
the game and when Joe Quinn pointed a free in the twenty fifth minute
the Gaels went into the lead for the first time in the game.
In an exciting,
tense finish, Derek Davey assured the Gaels victory with a well taken
fisted point in the last minute of the game. The Gaels fully deserved
their victory with man of the match performances from all sectors of
the team. Well done to the panel and management and they can now look
forward with confidence to the quarter finals. The

The Senior
Team are back in action this weekend with a league game away to Calry/St
Josephs on Sunday at 12.00PM.
The Junior
Team go into Championship action on Friday evening when they take on
St Johns in Markevicz Park at 8.00PM - please come out and support the
team.
The U-12
team were unlucky to lose to St Pats in the Semi-Final of the 'B' festival
at Markevicz Park last Saturday. The Gaels playing with the wind went
into a two point lead in the first quarter through points from Caolan
Morrisroe and Daniel Willis. In the second quarter further points from
Paul Quigley and Ciarain Kilfeather extended the Gaels lead to four
points. St Pats came back and scored a goal to leave just a point between
the teams at half time. Playing against the wind the Gaels did well
to hold St Pats and the teams were level going into the final quarter
with all to play for. In a tense closing quarter the sides were equally
matched right up to the end when St Pats went into the lead for the
first time with three minutes left. They finished with a goal in the
last minute to win on a scoreline of 2-3 to 0-5.The team was: Stephen
Keegan, Darragh Lyons, Ryan McKenna, Conor Carroll, Caolan McCann, Michael
Kilkenny, Daniel Willis (0-2), Caolan Morrisroe (0-1), Ciarain Kilfeather
(0-1), Mark Walsh, Mark Kearns, Declan Benson, Paul Higgins, Paul Quigley
(0-1), Mark Keegan.
This was
the U-12's last game of the year in official competitions and we would
like to thank them and managers Tommy McKenna and Cormac Kearns for
the efforts this year.
The U-14
team lost to St Mary's in the semi-final of the 'A' Championship on
Tuesday evening. The Gaels played their best football in the first half
and despite conceding a freak goal were well in contention at half time.
In the second half a stronger St Marys team pulled away and were deserving
winners in the end. The final score was 2-6 to 2-17. The team was: Kevin
Broderick, Shane Conlon, Diarmuid Heffernan, Liam Tuohy, Peter Lavin,
Gavin McMorrow, Conor Merrick, Declan Willis (1-2), Adrian McCann, Ronan
McTiernan, Ciaran O'Connor (0-3, 2f), Kieran Cawley, Eoin Carroll, Cathal
McDermott, Dylan Edwards (1-1). Subs; Brian Candon for Cathal McDemott,
Stephen Scanlon, Adrian Whelan, Conor McKeon.
This was
the U-14 teams last game of the year and the club would like to thank
the players for their efforts during the year - unfortunately this was
not to be your year. Also thanks to the team management of Mick Heffernan,
Michael Candon and Conor Mullen for their work with the team during

The Senior
team consolidated their league position with a three point victory over
Calry/St Josephs in round 12 of the league played on Sunday in Calry.
Calry opened the scoring in the second minute with a point from a free,
however the Gaels responded with a point from Vinny Boyd after a good
flowing move. Calry added a second on five minutes. Joe Quinn pointed
from a free while Frank Quinn scored a good point from a sideline kick
on eleven minutes to put the Gaels into the lead. Calry responded well
and were in the lead on fifteen minutes. The Gaels turned on the style
after that and and went on a scoring spree in the second quarter. Vinny
Boyd got the Gaels level on nineteen minutes after good play from Johnny
Burke and Eoin McDermott. Boyd added another a minute later to put the
Gaels into the lead. Eoin Mcdermott found the net on twenty two minutes
while Joe Quinn notched up three points in the last five minutes, two
from frees and one from a short 45. Indeed the Gaels could have been
further ahead as the Calry keeper denied Vinny Boyd in the closing minute
of the half. The half time score was 0-5 to 1-8.
Both sides
exchanged points in the opening stages of the second half. Johnny Burke
got the Gaels second goal on ten minutes after a great pass from Peter
Henry. Frank Quinn added another point while Derrick Davey added another
on fifteen minutes. Davey scored a great point from an acute angle on
eighteen minutes to put the Gaels ten points up and into a commanding
lead. The Gaels did lose their shape in the last ten minutes and they
let Calry into the game as they scored five points without reply to
narrow the gap. Johnny Burke broke the deadlock on the stroke of full
time while Calry got a consolation goal deep into injury time. The final
score was 1-13 to 2-13.
The team

Keith McMorrow, Niall Henry, Damien Lyons, Jarlath Lyons, Johnny Burke
(1-1), Frank Quinn (0-2), Vincent Boyd (0-4), Joe Quinn (0-4), Eoin

(inj).
The Seniors

The Junior
team had a good win against St Johns in the first round of the Championship
last Friday in Marchevicz Park last night. St Johns started brightly
and went into a three point lead after nine minutes. The Gaels got their
first score on eleven minutes when Peter Henry scored an impressive
point coming in from the left. The Gaels had a let off a minute later
when St Johns had a goal chance come off the crossbar. This awakened
the Gaels and they responded with five points without reply. Johnny
Kenny scored an excellent individual score on eleven minutes followed
by a point from midfielder Enda Tuohy. Kenny pointed two similar frees
in quick succession to put the Gaels into a two point lead on twenty
minutes. Noel McKenna added another after taking a good pass from Kenny.
Kelly again was on target for St John's on twenty eight minutes, however
the Gaels remained in control in the closing stages with a point from
Duncan Ryan and a great score from Enda Tuohy. The Gaels went in at
half time four points up on a scoreline of 0-8 to 0-4.
The Gaels
started the second half where they left off and scored three points
in the first ten minutes to race into a seven point lead. The first
was from Enda Tuohy on three minutes with Johnny Kenny adding another
on five while Peter Henry pointed from a free on the left. St Johns
started to dominate again for the next ten minutes and they scored two
points to narrow the gap to five midway through the half. The decisive
score came in the seventeenth minute when Kieran Coleman found himself
one on one with the goalkeeper and while his initial shot was saved,
he pounced on the rebound and scored the only goal of the game. This
put the Gaels into a commanding position and when Johnny Kenny scored
an excellent point from forty yards there was no way back for St Johns.
They did however not lie down and scored three points without reply,
however the deficit was too big and the Gaels finished strongly with
a point from Man of the Match, Johnny Kenny and another from Brian McDermott.
The final
score was 1-14 to 0-9. The Gaels now go on to play St Patricks in the
quarter final. The team was: Donal Tuohy, Raymond Murrin, Conor McDonagh,

The U-16
Team were in Championship action last week and came away with a draw
against Coolaney/Mullinabreena in the first round. The Gaels had the
benefit of a strong breeze in the first half and opened the scoring
with a David Quinn point in the first minute. Declan Willis scored the
Gaels second point on five minutes, however shortly after Coolaney/Mullinabreena
opened their account with a goal. The Gaels responded well with a goal
from Brian Boyd followed by a Eoin O'Connell point. Quinn added another
point and Eoin O'Connell finished the half with a great goal rounding
the keeper before blasting the ball to the net. The Gaels went in at
half time three points up on 2-6 to 2-3. The wind died down in the second
half and Coolaney/Mullinabreena were back in the game with a goal and
a point in the first seven minutes. In an exciting second half the gaels
did well and scored some nice points. David Quinn added two frees in
quick succession while Declan Willis and Johnny Quinn scored two good
points from play. In the closing stages David Quinn put the Gaels into
the lead, however Coolaney/Mullinabreena scored in the last few minutes
to earn a draw. The final score was 2-11 to 3-8.

The monthly
club meeting will be held this Friday night at 9.30PM in the clubhouse
- all committee members are asked to attend. The meeting will be preceded
by a Bord NaNog meeting at 8.30PM.
The Senior
team secured their Division 2 status for next year with a victory over
league leaders Geevagh last Sunday in Shamrock Gaels Park. Geevagh are
already promoted while the Gaels needed the two points to remain in
Division 2 and this was very evident on the day as the Gaels were much
hungrier on the day.
The Gaels
opened the scoring with a Jarlath Lyons point in the first minute and
went into a three point lead on eight minutes with a pointed free from
Joe Quinn and a point from James Lyons. Geevagh responded well and scored
three points without reply in the next few minutes to level the game.
Geevagh got a goal midway through the first half. Mark Tuohy in the
Gaels goals saved a goalbound shot, however the ball came back of the
crossbar into the arms of the Geevagh full forward who made no mistake
in finding the back of the net. The Gaels held their nerve and dominated
the second quarter scoring the next five points without reply. Frank
and Joe Quinn scored two each while Jarlath Lyons got his second to
go in at half time two points up on a scoreline of 0-8 to 1-3.
In a one
sided second half the Gaels completely dominated and held Geevagh scoreless
for twenty eight minutes and holding them to two points in the second
half. Derek Davey opened the scoring in the second minute with a fisted
point coming in from the left. There were several goalmouth scrambles
in the next couple of minutes and the Gaels were unable to find the
net despite several chances. Joe Quinn pointed a free on fourteen minutes
and followed this up with two more points to give the Gaels a comfortable
six point lead midway through the half. Geevagh had a great chance to
get back into the game in the closing stages, however Mark Tuohy pulled
off a great save to deny Kenneth Sweeney. They scored their first point
in the twenty eight minutes which was quickly canceled out by a James
Lyons point. Joe Quinn and Kenneth Sweeney exchanged frees in the closing
stages to leave the final score at 0-14 to 1-5. The team was: Mark Tuohy,
Colin Harte, Conor Mullen, Niall Henry, Michael Hannon, Keith McMorrow,
Paul Brennan, James Lyons (0-2), Jarlath Lyons (0-2), Johnny Burke,

The Juniors
had a great win over Castleconnor in an exciting league game played
this evening in Castleconnor. The Gaels raced into a seven point lead
with two points from Johnny Kenny, three from Glen McDermott and one
each from Duncan Ryan and Enda Tuohy. Castleconnor did not get their
first score until the twenty fourth minute when they scored two points
before Johnny Kenny responded for the Gaels. Castleconnor were then
awarded a penalty which they converted to narrow the score. The Gaels
then had three bad wides while Castleconnor finished the half strongly
with a goal and point to take the lead in the closing stages of the
half. Conor McDonagh scored for the Gaels to level the game while Mark
Boyd added another to give the Gaels the lead on half time on a scoreline
of 2-3 to 0-10.
Glen McDermott
got the Gaels first score of the second half on five minutes to extend
the lead while a point from Ciarain Coleman and two from Johnny Kenny
put the Gaels five points up midway through the second half. Castleconnor
to their credit fought back and leveled the game with a third goal and
two points on twenty minutes. The Gaels, however were too strong and
Glen McDermott responded with a good goal to restore the lead. The Gaels
scored the next four points without reply before Karl McDermott scored
the Gaels second goal after good work from Mark Boyd to put the game
beyond Castleconnor reach. Enda Tuohy rounded the game off with a point
in the closing stages. The final score was 3-6 to 2-19. The team and
scorers were:- Niall McDermott, Conor McDonagh (0-1), Raymond Murrin,

scores, however the Gaels quickly recovered and went into the lead with
points from Brian Boyd and Ciarain O'Connor. The Gaels did not relinquish
this lead and continued to score some impressive points and helped by
a great goal from Ciarain O'Connor went in at half time 12 points up
on a scoreline of 1-13 to 0-4. The Gaels continued their good form in
the second half and with goals from Robert Johnston and Kieran Coleman
were comprehensive winners in the end on a scoreline of 3-14 to 0-8.
The team was: Kevin Broderick, Richard Johnston, Gavin McMorrow, David
Willis, Paul O'Grady, Adrian McCann, Declan Willis (0-2), Joseph Burns
(0-1), Ciarain O'Connor (1-1), Eoin O'Connell (0-2), Kevin Coleman (1-1),

Boyd.

14th
July 2008
An under-strength
Gaels Senior team rounded off their league campaign with a draw against
Eastern Harps in an entertaining match on Sunday evening last in Keash.
Harps started the game brightly, with two points within the first 3
minutes, following on from two earlier wides by the home team. Vinny
Boyd got the Gaels on the scoresheet with a pointed free in the fifth
minute, which was followed two minutes later by a fine point from midfielder,
Jarlath Lyons to level the scores. Enda Touhy edged the Gaels in front
in the tenth minute with a good individual score. Harps responded with
a pointed free in the 11th minute, followed by another point two minutes
later to restore their advantage. Vinny Boyd levelled the match again
in the fifteenth minute from a free, which was won by Enda Tuohy following
some great work by the Gaels number 10. Harps took control after that
and kicked five points without reply, before Gaels full forward, Ollie
Mc Nulty, finished off a flowing Gaels move from their own kickout by
finding the back of the net in the twenty fifth minute. Harps responded
with a point a minute later to go into the half-time break with a three
point lead.
Harps started
the second half where they had left off, scoring three points without
reply in the first eight minutes, to go six points ahead. After this,
the Gaels finally started to pick up the pace and Derrick Davey popped
over a point in the twelfth minute, having had a shot rebound off the
upright just seconds before. Substitute Paul Higgins followed this up
two minutes later with a fine point coming in from the right hand side.
Peter Henry pointed in the eighteenth minute following a good run by
Frank Quinn. The Gaels were dominating proceedings at this stage and
missed two frees in the 20th and 21st minute before the Harps were reduced
to 14 men in the 22nd minute for a second bookable offence.
Peter Henry
pointed for the Gaels in the 23rd minute to reduce the deficit to two
points and Jarlath Lyons scored a fine point in the 24th minute before
Frank Quinn levelled the game on 27 minutes with a pointed free to complete
a spirited fightback by the Gaels. Harps scored their first point since
the eight minute of the half with a pointed free on 31 minutes to edge
back in front. The Gaels refused to lie down however and Frank Quinn
again levelled the match with an excellent point in the 33rd minute.
The final score was Shamrock Gaels 1-11, Eastern Harps 0-14 and on reflection,
a draw was probably a fair result.
The Gaels
team and scorers; Donal Tuohy, Colin Harte, Conor Mullen, Niall Henry,
Michael Hannon, Paul Brennan, Conor Mc Donagh, James Lyons, Jarlath
Lyons (0-2), Enda Tuohy (0-1), Vincent Boyd (0-2), Peter Henry (0-2),
Frank Quinn (0-2), Ollie Mc Nulty, Derrick Davey (0-1). Subs; Mark Tuohy
for Donal Tuohy, Paul Higgins (0-1) for Michael Hannon, Niall Craig
for Conor Mc Donagh and Kieran Coleman for Ollie Mc Nulty. This game
marked the return of Paul Higgins to Senior competitive action following
a long lay off due to injury and it was good to see Paul back in the
Gaels jersey again.

Ballymote, which is provisionally set for Saturday, 9th August.
The Juniors

July 2008
The
Gaels Junior team ensured their passage to the semi-finals of the Junior
Championship with a well deserved victory over St. Pat´s on Friday
evening at a wet and miserable Kent Park. The Gaels dominated play for
most of this game and despite a shaky final twenty minutes, they eventually
ran out as comfortable winners by a seven point margin.
St.
Pat´s opened the scoring with a pointed free in the first minute
of the game. However, the Gaels responded from the resultant kickout
with a flowing move up the pitch that ended up with a point from Johnny
Kenny. Duncan Ryan forced the Pats keeper into a good save 2 minutes
later after getting on to the end of a great run by Man of the Match,
Kenny. The Gaels followed this up with 3 consecutive wides in the following
3 minutes, before Kenny again pointed in the 10th minute from a free
on the 45 metre line. The Gaels were dominating proceedings at this
stage, especially around the middle of the park. However, St. Pat´s
restored parity in the 13th minute with a fisted point following a goalmouth
scramble. This however was to be their last score of the half, as the
Gaels continued to pile on the pressure.
The
Gaels had another wide in the 16th minute before half-forward, Brian
Mc Dermott, scored a great goal in the 18th minute. This move started
in the Gaels full back line, with the ball being swept upfield before
Johnny Kenny got on the ball and, following an excellent run, passed
cleverly inside to Mc Dermott, who made no mistake with a cool finish
to the net. The Gaels had another wide 3 minutes later, before Kieran
Coleman got on the scoresheet in the 23rd minute with a nice fisted
point, having come in from the right hand side. Duncan Ryan pounced
on a loose ball 2 minutes later to extend the Gaels lead before Kenny
pointed again in the 26th minute from a long range free off the ground.
The Gaels had two more wides in the final few minutes of the half, one
of which rebounded off the upright. This left them ahead at half time
on a scoreline of 1-5 to 0-2.
St.
Pat´s were again first out of the blocks in the second half, with
a wide in the 1st minute, followed by a pointed free 2 minutes later.
They went on to record 2 further wides in the following couple of minutes
before Kieran Coleman got the Gaels off the mark with a great point
against the run of play in the 7th minute. The Gaels registered another
wide before what was to prove to be the decisive score of the game came
in the 12th minute, when the Gaels were awarded a penalty. The penalty
resulted from a good run by Enda Foley, who released to full-forward
Glen Mc Dermott, who was in turn fouled by the St. Pat´s defence
inside the box. Johnny Kenny stepped up to coolly blast the ball to
the top left corner of the net to put the Gaels ahead on a scoreline
of 2-6 to 0-3.
Complacency
then seemed to set in with the Gaels, as they allowed St. Pat´s
back into the game and in fact failed to score again until deep into
injury time. St.Pat´s had 2 wides in the 16th and 18th minutes,
the latter from a free, before their centre half forward sent over a
fine point from a 45 on twenty minutes. The Gaels registered another
wide in the 23rd minute before they had a let-off on 25 minutes, when
the St.Pat´s full forward blazed a goal chance wide from a very
scoreable position. He made amends a minute later however with a point,
to pull the scoreline back to 2-6 to 0-6 in favour of the Gaels.
This
was a nervy period of the game for the Gaels and they were thankful
for the solidfoundations that had been built in the first half, as St.
Pat´s were on top for the remainder of the half. They couldn´t
find the target however, registering two further scoreable wides as
full time beckoned. Duncan Ryan saw his fisted effort for the Gaels
go wide on 32 minutes, before Enda Tuohycapped the game off with a nice
point in the 33rd minute to seal matters for the Gaels. Final scoreline;
Shamrock Gaels 2-7, St. Patrick´s 0-6. Gaels team and scorers;
Donal Tuohy, Raymond Murrin, Conor Mc Donagh, Sean Mc Hugh, Donal Mc
Dermott, Niall Henry, Jason Murrin, Enda Tuohy(0-1), Johnny Kenny (1-3),
Brian Mc Dermott (1-0), Enda Foley, Kieran Coleman (0-2), Peter Henry,
Glen Mc Dermott, Duncan Ryan (0-1). Subs; James Conlon for Donal Mc
Dermott.
The Gaels
now go on to play Tubbercurry in Ballymote next Sunday evening at 6.00pm
in the semi-final of the Junior Championship. Thanks to all of the Gaels
supporters who braved the elements for the St. Pat´s game and
we hope to see an even bigger attendance at the semi-final.
The Senior
team continued their Championship preparations with a useful workout
in a challenge game against Leitrim side, Allen Gaels at Shamrock Gaels
Park last Saturday evening. It is hoped to arrange another challenge
game during the course of this week - details at training. The club
sympathise with the relatives of Padraig Mc Gonigle, who died in London
last week.

The Gaels
Junior team is through to the final of the Junior Championship following
a well merited win over Tubbercurry in Ballymote last Sunday evening.
Trailing by 4 points after the first quarter, the Gaels staged a spirited
comeback to eventually run out as deserving winners by an 8 point margin.
Tubber
started the game brightly and were first off the mark with a point after
1 minute. The Gaels registered a wide in the 2nd minute, before Tubber
hit 3 unanswered points to race into a 4 point lead after 9 minutes.
Tubber were dominating proceedings at this stage of the game. The Gaels
finally got off the mark in the 10th minute, when Enda Foley had a goal
chance blocked, however Johnny Kenny pointed from the
ensuing goalmouth scramble.
The turning
point of the game came in the 12th minute, when Peter Henry got on the
end of Glen Mc Dermott's rebounded shot off the upright to cleverly
slot the ball into the net to level the match. Tubbercurry had a wide
from a free a minute late, before the Gaels had a real let off when
the Tubber No. 10 blazed a great goal chance wide. Tubber went on to
hit 3 more wides over the next 7 minutes, during which the Gaels also
registered a wide from a free. Enda Tuohy finally put the Gaels ahead
with a point in the 23rd minute. The sides then exchanged wides in the
next 2 minutes, before Duncan Ryan pointed a free from a foul on Glen
Mc Dermott. Tubber had 2 further wides in the next couple of minutes
before Johnny Kenny pointed on thirty minutes, collecting Peter Henry's
rebounded shot following a great run by the Gales No. 10. This score
put the Gaels into a 1-4 to 0-4 lead going into the break.
Tubber
started the second half with a point after 40 seconds. However, this
was to be their last score until 18 minutes later, as the Gaels upped
the pace and started to dominate, especially around the midfield area.
Duncan Ryan again pointed in the 3rd minute when he collected Noel McKenna's
rebounded effort, before Johnny Kenny sent over a nice point a minute
later to extend the Gaels lead. Kenny was again on the mark a minute
later with a great point, before midfielder, Noel McKenna, got on the
score sheet with an excellent point on 10 minutes following a great
run. The hard working Enda Foley then fired over two good points in
the 11th and 13th minutes to put the Gaels out of sight, on a scoreline
of 1-10 to 0-5. Both sides registered wides in the following couple
of minutes - one of them a goal chance for Tubber, before Tubber finally
pulled back a point for his side on 18 minutes. The Gaels registered
two wides following this, one of them coming off the upright from Peter
Henry. Tubber registered only their 3rd point of
the half on 31 minutes before Duncan Ryan pointed 2 minutes later. Tubber
had another wide after this, before Johnny Kenny registered his fifth
point of the game deep into injury time to round off the Gaels' scoring.
The final
score was Shamrock Gaels 1-12, Tubbercurry 0-7. Team and Scorers: Donal
Tuohy, Raymond Murrin, Conor McDonagh, Sean McHugh, Donal McDermott,
Jason Murrin, Niall Craig, Noel McKenna (0-1), Enda Tuohy (0-1), Johnny
Kenny (0-5), Enda Foley (0-2), Brian McDermott, Peter Henry (1-0), Glen

Kieran Coleman for Brian McDermott and Eddie Gogans for Duncan Ryan.

A below-par
Junior team were well beaten in the Junior Championship final by Bunninadden
at Markievicz Park on Saturday evening. This was a disappointing performance
by the Gaels, who failed to reproduce the sparkling form of the earlier
stages of the Championship. Despite going into the half-time break 2
points up, they failed to score in the 2nd half of the game. Bunninadden
on the other hand notched up 1-7 during the second period and this summed
up the pattern of the final. The game started with both sides exchanging
wides in the first five minutes, before Bunninadden opened the scoring
in the 7th minute following a flowing move up the pitch. They followed
this up with a pointed free in the 9th minute. The Gaels were very slow
to settle into the game during this period, however they eventually
got off the mark in the 12th minute when Kieran Coleman latched onto
a poor Bunninadden clearance to fire over the Gaels opening score.
Both sides exchanged wides in the following 3 minutes, before Enda Tuohy
sent over a good point under pressure in the 16th minute. Enda Foley
followed this up with another point for the Gaels in the 18th minute,
following a move that originated in the Gaels backline.
The Gaels
half-back, Sean Mc Hugh, then got onto the end of a Johnny Kenny run
in the 20th minute to nudge the Gaels ahead by 2 points with a well
taken score. At this stage, the Gaels were dominating proceedings, especially
around the middle of the park, whilst Bunninadden dropped a number of
efforts into the hands of Gaels keeper, Donal Tuohy. The industrious
Enda Tuohy scored his second point on 21 minutes following a neat interchange
between Noel Mc Kenna and Johnny Kenny. Peter Henry then had a point
disallowed a minute later for over carrying. Bunninadden followed this
with two further shots that dropped short into Donal Tuohys arms.
Both sides exchanged two wides each before Bunninadden kept themselves
in contention with a fine pointed free from an acute angle on the stroke
of half-time to leave the scoreline Shamrock Gaels 0-5, Bunninadden
0-3 going into the break.
Peter Henrys
goal bound shot was parried off the upright by the Bunninadden keeper
in the 2nd minute of the second half before Bunninadden reduced the
deficit to the bare minimum a minute later with a converted free. They
equalised in the 5th minute with another point, following a poor Gaels
defensive clearance. The Gaels had a golden opportunity to pull clear
again in the 7th minute, when Enda Foley saw his goal bound fisted effort
from a dropping ball ricochet off the Bunninadden upright. By this stage
however, Bunninadden were gaining the upper-hand and they had a further
wide in the 8th minute before finally going ahead in the 10th minute
from a pointed free.
The Gaels
had another wide a minute later from an acute angle, before Bunninadden
pulled further ahead with two successive points in the 14th and 16th
minutes. They could have extended their lead in the 20th minute but
for a tremendous save by Donal Touhy from point blank range. Bunninadden
were now making much better use of the wide open spaces of Markievicz
Park and the Gaels challenge was fading fast. Bunninadden had
another wide in the 23rd minute before ending the game as a contest
with a well taken goal in the 26th minute to widen the margin to 6 points.
The Gaels could not muster any response to this blow, as Bunninadden
went on to tack on a further 2 points in the 27th and 28th minutes.
The final score was: Shamrock Gaels 0-5, Bunninadden 1-10.
It was
a pity that this fine Junior team did not do themselves justice in the
final but we nevertheless congratulate Bunninadden on their success
and hope that next year will be our year in this competition. The Gaels
team and scorers: Donal Tuohy, Raymond Murrin, Niall Henry, Sean Mc
Hugh (0-1), Jason Murrin, Donal Mc Dermott, Noel Mc Kenna, Enda Tuohy
(0-2), Kieran Coleman (0-1), Johnny Kenny, Enda Foley (0-1), Peter Henry,
Duncan Ryan. Subs: Glen Mc Dermott for Duncan Ryan, Brian Mc Dermott
for Kieran Coleman, James Conlon for Donal Mc Dermott, Mark Boyd for
Enda Foley, Duncan Ryan for Peter Henry.

during the season. Finally, thanks to Glen Mc Dermott and his staff

The
Senior Team went down to Ballymote in the final championship group match
played last Saturday in Tubbercurry. Already in the quarter finals,
the Gaels failed to reach the standards set in the opening two rounds
and were up against a hungrier Ballymote team that needed a point to
secure their place in the next round.
The
Gaels were slow to settle and went six points down before registering
their first score through a Joe Quinn free on ten minutes. Ballymote
pointed again shortly after while Joe Quinn pointed another free a minute
later to narrow the margin to five points. The Gaels were starting to
win more possession around midfield and in the half-forward line, however,
they were unable to convert this possession on to the scoreboard, as
they kicked three wides in quick succession one of which was a goal
chance from Joe Quinn, who ran onto an Eoin Mc Dermott knock down only
to see his side-footed shot go wide of the upright. The Gaels were to
rue these missed opportunities, as Ballymote scored a point against
the run of play.
Joe
Quinn responded with a point to keep the Gaels in touch as the rain
made playing conditions difficult. The Gaels battled hard to haul back
Ballymote's lead with Frank Quinn pointing after a short free, however
Ballymote quickly responded with a point. Joe Quinn finished off the
first half scoring with a pointed free for the Gaels on to leave the
Gaels five points behind at half time.
On the restart Joe Quinn was again on with a pointed free after three
minutes. Ballymote pointed again however their forward line were guilty
of some poor finishing, with a succession of five wides over the next
ten minutes. Gaels half-back, Michael Hannon popped over a good point
to take advantage of a poor Ballymote defensive clearance on seventeen
minutes to reduce the deficit to four points. The Gaels attack were
finding possession hard to come by at this stage of the game but Frank
Quinn did point a free on twenty two minutes to keep in touch.
The
Gaels were given a lifeline in the closing stages and had the chance
to reduce the deficit to a point when they were awarded a penalty however
Joe Quinn pointed from the resulting spot kick. The Gaels conceded a
goal in the last minute and in the end lost on a scoreline of 2-9 to
0-9.
The
Team and scorers were: Mark Tuohy, Colin Harte, Conor Mullen, James
Lyons, Michael Hannon (0-1), Keith Mc Morrow, Paul Brennan, Jarlath
Lyons, Damien Lyons, Vincent Boyd, Frank Quinn (0-2), Johnny Burke,
Derrick Davey, Eoin Mc Dermott, Joe Quinn (0-6). Subs; Enda Tuohy for

The
U-16 team topped Group 4 in the final league game of the Championship
with a comprehensive victory over St Patricks on Wednesday evening in
Shamrock Gaels Park. The game was played in difficult conditions with
heavy rain throughout. Ciarain O'Connor opened the scoring within two
minutes with a goal while this was followed four minutes later with
another goal from Brian Boyd. David Quinn scored the Gaels third goal
on twenty two minutes, however St Pat's kept in touch with two goals
of their own and the half time score was 3-2 to 2-2. In the second half
Brian Boyd opened the scoring on three minutes followed by a pointed
free from David Quinn. A Declan Willis goal mid-way through the second
half put the Gaels into a commanding lead that St Pat's were unable
to claw back having only scored two points in the second half. The final
score was 4-6 to 2-4. The team was: Kevin Broderick, Shane Barry, David
Willis, Gearoid McTiernan, Paul O'Grady, Adrian McCann, Joseph Burns,
Declan Willis (1-1), Jonathan Quinn, David Quinn (1-4), Kevin Coleman,

this Friday evening 29th August at 9.30PM in the Clubhouse.

the Gaels Senior team take on Curry in the Championship Quarter Final
at 6.30PM. Please come out and support the team and management who have
put in a hugh effort over the last few months to reach the quarter final.
The
Minors made their exit from the 2008 'B' Championship after losing to
St Farnans last Monday evening. The Gaels were six points down at half
time however they put in a good second half performance and were unlucky
not to have found the net on a number of ocassions late in the game.
This may have put a different complexion on the scoreline however it
wasn't to be. The final score was Shamrock Gaels 1-09 St Farnans 3-10.
The team was: John Craig, Sam Johnston, Andrew Nealon, Niall Brennan,
Gearoid McTiernan, Joseph Henry, Donal Byrne, Liam O'Connell (0-1),
Kevin Barry (0-1), Patrick O'Grady (1-3), Mark Boyd (0-2), Robert Clarke
(0-1), Sean O'Connell (0-1), Subs: David Quinn for Donal Byrne, Paul
O'Grady for Sean O'Connell.
We
would like to thank the team for their efforts during the year - this
is a very young minor team and we are sure 2009 will be more successful.
Thanks to the management team of Michael Tuohy, Phillip Kearns and Paddy
Byrne for their work with the team and their committment.
In
the last underage match of the year, a depleted U-16 team gave a disappointing
display against St Maloise Gaels last Thursday in the quarter final
of the 'B' Championship. The Gaels struggled to get into the game and
found it difficult to cope with a more physical St Molaise Gaels side.
The Gaels found themselves seven points down after twenty minutes of
the first half and despite losing keeper Kevin Broderick through injury
the Gaels finished the half strongly with a goal from Robert Johnston.
In the second half a quick goal from Molaise's gave a young Gaels team
an uphill battle. They did rise to the task and despite having quite
a lot of possession they failed to close the gap. The Gaels scored some
nice points however they needed goals and they did not come. St Molaise's
finished strongly with two further goals to win on a scoreline of 1-7
to 3-14. The team was: Kevin Broderick, Shane Barry, David Willis, Sean
Kilfeather (0-2), Paul O'Grady, Kevin Coleman, Declan Willis (0-1),
Joseph Burns (0-1), Robert Johnston (1-1), David Quinn, Eoin O'Connell,
Brian Boyd (0-2), Ciarain O'Connor Subs: Gearoid McTiernan for Kevin
Coleman, Conor McKeon for Kevin Broderick. We wish Kevin Broderick a
speedy recovery.
We would also like to thank the U-16 team for their efforts and committment
during the year. Thanks to the management team of Francis Quinn and
Niall Cregg for their work with the team. Thanks also to all the other
club members who helped Frank out during the year.
The
annual Bord na nOg auction has been set for 26th October.
The
club wish to sympatise with the family and relatives of Pat McDonagh,
Aughoo, Sooey, Willie O'Grady, Knockadalteen, Ballymote and Nora Quinn,
Galway and formerly of Heapstown, all of whom died during the week.

The Gaels
Senior Team made their exit from this years championship despite a brave
effort against Curry in an exciting quarter final played in Markievicz
Park last Saturday evening.
The Gaels
started brightly and won the better of the early exchanges taking the
lead through a Joe Quinn free on four minutes. Curry, however quickly
responded with a point from the kick out. They took the lead on seven
minutes through a point from Gary Maye. Curry started to dominate the
game and were putting the Gaels backline under a lot of pressure. They
scored a further four points without reply to lead by five points mid-way
through the first half. Indeed the Gaels could have been further behind
as keeper Mark Tuohy pulled off a point blank save while shortly afterwards
Curry were denied another goal after the ball came back of the crossbar.
The Gaels scored their second point on twenty minutes from a Joe Quinn
free while half back Michael Hannon also pointed after a good move involving
Frank Quinn and Jarlath Lyons. Curry responded well with three further
points to go in to a six point lead as the half drew to a close. Joe
Quinn added another point from a free to narrow the gap, while the Gaels
were denied a goal on the stroke of half time after Frank Quinn drew
a great save from the Curry keeper. The half time score was 0-9 to 0-4
in favour of Curry.
The Gaels
had it all to do in the second half and they started very strongly with
two quick points from Frank Quinn and Vincent Boyd. The Gaels moved
Conor Mullen to midfield and this seemed to work as they started to
win a lot of possession. Sean Davey added a point for Curry while John
Paul Henry responded with an excellent point from distance on eight
minutes. Joe Quinn added another from a free on twelve minutes to narrow
the gap to two points. The score of the game came mid-way through the
half when the Gaels worked the ball all the way up the field for man
of the match, Joe Quinn to score an excellent point from an acute angle
on the left. Curry showed their experience and responded immediately
with a point from their full forward on the re-start.
In a frantic
last quarter the Gaels completely dominated proceedings winning a lot
of possession around the middle. John Paul Henry fisted over a point
from a long ball sent in by Jarlath Lyons on twenty six minutes to put
the minimum between the teams. The Gaels sensed victory, however they
unfortunally had three wides in quick succession and were unable to
get that vital score to level the game. Curry tagged on two late points
in injury time to deny the Gaels a historic victory.
Despite
making their exit from the Championship, the Gaels, who are a very young
team, can look back on the year with satisfaction and the experience
gained this year will stand to them in the year ahead. It is only a
matter of time before this team makes the breakthrough.
The final
score was 0-13 to 0-10. The team was: Mark Tuohy, Colin Harte, Conor
Mullen, James Lyons, Michael Hannon (0-1), Keith McMorrow, Niall Henry,
Jarlath Lyons, Damien Lyons, (Capt), Vincent Boyd (0-1), Frank Quinn
(0-1), Johnny Burke, John Paul Henry (0-2), Paul Brennan, Joe Quinn
(0-5). Subs: Paul Higgins for Niall Henry, Enda Tuohy for Vinny Boyd
(inj), Peter Henry for Johnny Burke (inj).
The club
wish to thank all who came out in large numbers to support the team
on Saturday adding much colour to the ocassion. This was the last Senior
game of the year and the club would like to thank the players for their
commitment since last January. Thanks also to the management team of
John Quinn, Shane Quigley, Fergal White, Eugene Carroll and physio Eamon
McMunn for the tremendous commitment given to preparing the team this
year - the players and Management continue to make great sacrifices
to ensure we compete at the highest level.
The winner
of the half time draw for Shamrock Gaels gear was Daniel Murphy.
The winners
of the July draw were, Fergal McLoughlin, Bernie Quigley and Enda Tuohy
while the August winners were Vincent Henry, Eugene Quigley, Mattie
Quigley
We would
like to thank Michael Brennan for his work with the minors this year
- due to a typo his name was excluded last week.
The Ladies
team were beaten on Sunday at home to St Michaels on a scoreline of
2-2 to 3-10.
The U-10
and U-12 teams had a great day out in Croke Park last Saturday with
a tour of the stadium and the museum. The children were extremely well
behaved and represented the Club well in Croke Park - hopefully some
of them will be back to play in Croker in the Sligo colours in years
to come. The club would like to thank Paul Little who put a lot of work
into organising the trip over the last month - it went off smoothly
without a hitch. Thanks also to the parents who travelled and helped
out on the day, Niall Kearns, Tommy McKenna, Josephine Leyden, Rosario
Johnston and Fiona Walsh.
The U-8's
and U-10's travelled to Tubbercurry last Friday evening for a very successful
blitz. This was a great evenings entertainment watched by a large number
of parents who had made the trip. The U-8's won both of their games
and while the U-10's were unsuccessful they nevertheless put on a great
show. The U-8 team was: Michael Barry, Ultan McKenna, Patrick Benson,
Jean Benson, Ryan Brennan, James Carroll, Sean Carroll, Daniel Lyons,
Dylan Willis, Paul Costello, Dylan McDermott, Brian Johnston, Niall
McGovern, Mairead Tuohy, Rachel Boyd, Paul Leyden, Roisin Kearns. The
U-10 team was Conor Heffernan, Paul Harrington, Stephen Willis, Ben
Tuohy, Alan Kelly, Mark Keegan, Cian McDermott, Daniel Murphy, Karl
McKenna, Daire Kearns, Enda O'Connell, Conor McGreavy, Colan McCormack,
Andrew Flynn, Luke Flynn, Sinead McGovern, Joanne Johnston, Sheona Leyden.
Training
continues this Saturday at 11.00AM for the U-8's and U-10's.
As all
of the football action for the year draws to a close we would like to
thank all of the parents for their support during the year in travelling
to games and providing much needed support.
The annual
Bord na nOg auction has been set for 26th October.
The club
wish to sympatise with the family and relatives of Sean Daly, Boyle
who died last weekend. The club also wish to sympatise with Pauric and
Liam Gray, Ballindoon on the death of their sister Eva Atchenson, Leitrim
Village, recently and to Ronnie Walsh, Ballygawley on the death of his

The Minor
team advanced to the final of the Plate competition with a comprehensive
victory over Owenmore Gaels at Templeboy last Saturday evening. The
Gaels were always in control of this game and were six points up after
ten minutes with a goal and a point from Kevin Barry, two points from
Patrick O'Grady, and one from mid-fielder Liam O'Connell. Mark Boyd
pointed on nineteen minutes while Kevin Barry extended the lead with
another point a minute later. Boyd added two more points before Sean
O'Connell scored the Gaels second goal to extend the Gaels lead to twelve
points and this effectively ended the game as a contest. Patrick O'Grady
added two points while Owenmore Gaels responded with two to leave the
half time score 2-9 to 0-5 in favour of Shamrock Gaels.
Patrick
O'Grady started the second half where he had left off with a point within
the first minute. Owenmore Gaels responded with a point however any
hope of a revival was short lived as the Gaels scored their third goal
on five minutes through the impressive Kevin Barry as he cleverly chipped
the advancing keeper. Niall Brennan popped up from centre back to score
a point in the tenth minute while Barry added two more in the following
minutes. In a scrappy second half Owenmore Gaels did dominate the fourth
quarter and pulled a goal and a point back and also forced a great save
from stand in keeper David Quinn, however it was too little too late
and the Gaels ran out comfortable winners on a scoreline of 3-15 to
1-9. The team was: David Quinn, Joseph Henry, Sam Johnston, Andrew Nealon,
Niall Brennan (0-1), Paul O'Grady, Liam O'Connell (0-1), Donal Byrne,
David Kelly, Mark Boyd (0-3), Kevin Barry (2-5), Patrick O'Grady (0-5),
Sean O'Connell (1-0), Sub: Eoin O'Connell for David Kelly.

second goal on five minutes. Two points from Stephen Scanlon extended
the Gaels lead while Daniel Willis added two more goals to put the Gaels
into a commanding lead after eleven minutes. Two more goals from Ciarain
Kilfeather and Daniel Willis in the next five minutes put the game beyond
doubt. Owenmore Gaels did have a good spell towards the end of the first
half and scored two goals without reply to leave the half time score
at 5-4 to 3-1. Daniel Willis started the second half as he had the first

a large turnout. The day finished up with novelty sports and penalty
shoot outs and eagerly contested football matches. All players were
presented with a medal and refreshments afterwards. The coaching started
last March and each Saturday the children have met new friends and experienced
the emotions of winning and losing in a friendly and enjoyable environment
while at the same time developing and improving their Gaelic football
skills. A special word of thanks to all of the Team Managers and coaches
- too many to mention - for their commitment and many hours of coaching
since last March - hope to see you all back next year. Thanks to Senior
players Frank Quinn and Keith McMorrow for helping out on Saturday -
it is important that more Senior Players get involved at this level

The U-20 team defeated St Patricks by the narrowest of margins last
Saturday in an exciting match played in St Patricks. St Pat's started
the game brightly racing into a five point lead with a well taken goal
after nine minutes. The Gaels were guilty of some bad wides and had
four wides before Vinny Boyd finally opened the Gaels account with a
point after a foul on Enda Tuohy after eleven minutes. St Pat's added
three more points in quick succession and the Gaels found themselves
seven points down mid way through the first half with St Pat's in command.
Ciarain
Coleman did have a goal chance however his shot came back of the upright
and the rebound went straight into the keeper's hands. The Gaels, however
did settle down and a point from Vinny Boyd and another from Patrick
O'Grady narrowed the gap. The Gaels were given a boost on twenty five
minutes when Conor Mullen converted a penalty after a foul on Enda Tuohy.
St Pat's were awarded a penalty two minutes later but John Craig made
a great save to keep the Gaels in contention. St Pat's added another
point on the stroke of half time to leave the half time score 1-6 to
1-3.
The Gaels
started the second half brightly with a great point from Conor Mullen
on three minutes. Mullen was again on the scoreboard after five minutes
with another point after a good interchange with Vinny Boyd. The Gaels
were rocked on nine minutes when St Pat's were awarded a second penalty
which they converted to go into a five point lead. The Gaels responded
with a free from Ciarain Coleman, however two quick points from St Pat's
after thirteen minutes stretched their lead to seven points for the
second time in the game and it was not looking good for the Gaels. This
was further compounded with three wides in the following minutes.
Ciaran
Coleman settled the nerves with a point after nineteen minutes while
Vinny Boyed scored a point from a free on twenty five minutes to narrow
the gap to four points and set up an exciting finish. Boyd was the hero
a minute later with a great goal from the 21 yard line. Conor Mullen
got the equalising point on twenty eight minutes and at this stage the
Gaels sensed victory. The winning point did come on the twenty ninth
minute when Vinny Boyd scored a fantastic point under pressure. Both
sides exchange wides in injury time and the Gaels held on for a great
victory. The final score was 2-9 to 2-10. The team was: John Craig,
Paul Higgins, Liam O'Connell, Kevin Barry, Paul Brennan, Brian McDermott,
Conor Mullen (1-3), Peter Henry, Enda Tuohy, Vinny Boyd (1-4), Mark
Boyd, Ciarain Coleman (0-2), Patrick O'Grady (0-1). Sub: Robert Clarke

The U-20 team defeated St Mary's in the final round of the 'B' Championship
last Saturday in Riverstown. The Gaels top the table and advance to
the final against Drumcliffe at a date to be announced. The Gaels had
the benefit of a strong breeze in the first half and they opened the
scoring with a point from a Peter Henry free on two minutes. St Marys
responded immediately with a point. Mark Boyd scored a point on four
minutes after a good
move up the pitch while Enda Tuohy added the Gaels third point in the
fifth minute from an acute angle. Both teams exchanged wides in the
following few minutes with St Mary's adding their second on twelve minutes.
Vinny Boyd scored a great point from the sideline on fourteen minutes
while St Marys responded with a point. The Gaels dominated the next
ten minutes scoring five points in a row, the first from Paddy O'Grady
followed by a free from Peter Henry and a point from Ciarain Coleman.
Enda Tuohy scored a good point under pressure on twenty two minutes
while Vinny Boyd extended the Gaels lead to five points on twenty five
minutes. St Marys kept in touch in the closing stages with two points
to leave the half time score at 0-9 to 0-6.
St
Mary's started the second half with a point however the Gaels dominated
the next fifteen minutes extending their lead to eight points. Conor
Mullen added a point on six minutes while on the tenth minute he scored
the only goal of the game when he converted a penalty. Ciarain Coleman
added a point from the kick out while Vinny Boyd scored his third and
the Gaels last point on thirteen minutes. The Gaels started to relax
and they let St Mary's back into the game in the final quarter. St Mary's
scored six points without reply to narrow the gap to two points and
were it not for six wides from Mary's - the result could have been different.
The Gaels survived a late goalouth scramble to take the points and advance
to the final. The final score was 1-12 to 0-13. The team was; John Craig,
Paul Higgins, Liam O'Connell, Kevin Barry, Paul Brennan, Brian McDermott,

The U-13 team completed their involvement in the Feile competition at
the weekend losing out to Geevagh in an exciting match played in Shamrock
Gaels Park. A young Gaels team played extremely well in the first half
and was only behind by two points going into the second half; however
some quick goals from Geevagh early in the second half put them into
a commanding lead. The Gaels fought bravely and finished the game strongly
however they had leaked too many goals and Geevagh took the points to
go top of the table and into the quarter finals. The final score was
4-5 to 9-6. The team was: Stephen Keegan, Declan Benson, Liam Tuohy,
Paul Higgins, Conor Carroll, Ryan McKenna, Darragh Lyons, Michael Kilkenny

Shamrock
Gaels clinched the U20 'B' Championship after defeating Drumcliffe/Rosses
Point in an exciting final played under lights in Tourlestrane last
Friday night. This is the first Gaels win at this level since we completed
three in a row in 1989 and has been a long time coming.
The game
was played in difficult conditions with a constant drizzle blowing across
the pitch, this led to a lot of handling errors as both sides found
it difficult to cope with the slippery ball. The Gaels opened the scoring
with a point from Vinny Boyd on two minutes after a foul on Ciarain
Coleman. Drumcliffe had two wides in quick succession while the Gaels
had a great chance for a goal when a long ball in from Vinny Boyd to
Enda Tuohy brought out a great save from the Keeper. The resulting 45
was taken short to Paddy O'Grady who made no mistake and pointed for
the second score. Drumcliffe got their first score midway through the
first half from a free. The Gaels stated to dominate the game for the
next ten minutes; however they failed to score with many wasted opportunities
and had three wides in a row. Drumcliffe scored a second point on twenty
four minutes against the run of play and took the lead on twenty seven
minutes. The Gaels responded quickly and Kevin Barry popped up from
the backline to score a point after a good run from Vinny Boyd. The
Gaels stretched their lead on the stoke of half time when Vinny Boyd
got on the end of a great flowing move to leave the half time score
0-4 to 0-3 in favour of the Gaels.
Drumcliffe
started the second half brightly registering their first score on six
minutes through Niall Collery to level the game after a mistake in the
Gaels defence. The Gaels did not panic however and stretched their lead
again with a good point from Conor Mullen after a neat interchange by
the Boyd brothers. This
was followed by a good point from Vinny Boyd from an acute angle after
good approach play by Kevin Barry. The Gaels had a let off on twelve
minutes when a low shot from Drumcliffe's Neil Ewing slid across the
Gaels goalmouth to the relief of keeper John Craig. Vinny Boyd calmed
the Gaels nerves on sixteen minutes to stretch the lead to three points
with a converted free.
Both sides
exchanged wides as the pace of the game picked up in the closing stages
with many mistakes being made by both sides in the difficult conditions.
Drumcliffe narrowed the gap on twenty three minutes; however when Paddy
O'Grady cleverly converted a point over his head on twenty eight minutes
the Gaels, cheered on by the large crowd sensed victory. The Gaels had
to survive two late scares but held on to clinch victory on a final
scoreline of 0-8 to 0-5.
In an emotional
acceptance speech, captain Paul Brennan dedicated the victory to Karl
Galvin who was part of the panel up to his tragic death a few weeks
ago. Well done to the team and mentors, Shane Quigley and Mark Tuohy
for picking up the pieces and recording this victory in Karl's memory.

for the late Fergal Whelan who died tragically last Friday. Fergal played
underage football for the Gaels and his brothers Adrian and Niall are
current underage players. The club wish to extend sympathy to Enda and
Catherine and their family on their sad loss.

The Club
will be reviving the Dinner Dance in 2009. It will take place on Friday
20th March in Castle Dargan †put the date in the
